Emergency Care - Guidelines to Follow During Equine Emergencies
"Prompt, competent, reliable 24/7 Emergency Service is essential to the health and welfare of horses and the peace of mind of every responsible owner. It is the most value-added service we provide. It consists of emergency coverage and emergency care.
Emergency care is preceded by and can not exist without emergency coverage. Emergency coverage means putting the horses and their owners ahead of the interests of family, friends, and self. In our practice, it has always meant 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Birthdays, anniversaries, bad weather, holidays, recreation, personal comfort, sickness, fatigue, and injury are ignored when the call comes in. During the routine work day, the practice sustains the costs and disruption of extra phone calls, excessive travel time and mileage, rescheduling of appointments and overtime pay. Non-clinical but nonetheless essential supportive work and duties are pushed into nights and weekends.
The fees charged for emergency service are at best a symbolic attempt to partially recover some of the associated costs of emergency call. These fees are not punitive nor do they remotely begin to compensate for the countless hours of simply being prepared: i.e., emergency coverage." - Harry W. Werner, VMD
